My name is Michelle Frost.  And I was once where you are.

When I was starting out, just trying to find some way to bring more money in for my family… so my husband could stop working away from home and be a dad to our 5 young children. I remember feeling like a “deer in the headlights”, not knowing what to do next.

You see I wasn’t always making my living online and teaching people how they can too — you might be surprised to find out that I’d never even heard of ‘online marketing’ before 2004 (online marketing is how to sell stuff online).  That was when I went to my first How-To conference..

But I’m getting ahead of myself, this story actually begins when I had my 5th child (Sebastian), and I’ll admit it…

Back Then I Was A Stay At Home Mom

What can I say?  We had 5 children aged between 0 & 11, and the thought of me returning to full-time teaching, managing the house and kids just seemed impossible..  So I became a full-time mom (mum in Australia ).  And for a while this was great.

However to make up for me not working and to keep paying our bills Simon (my husband) had to take work that had him flying all over the country (& some times overseas).  This meant that he was away from home a lot!

From outside our family, you would say our lives looked great!! – mom at home for the kids and dad make ‘good’ money to keep every thing going We even sent the kids to private school..

AND WE WERE MISERABLE.

Simon missed the first steps AND the first words from our youngest – he was (and still is) devastated by that!   Then he was sent on a job that was supposed to be for only 6 weeks – well the weeks turned into months – we only saw him twice over a 4 month period..

At one stage the kids didn’t recognize him on one of his trips home (Simon had grown a beard!) – Some thing had to give!!

While Simon was working away from home for months on end, I started to research on the internet, looking for “opportunities” that I could work on at home.  All I needed to do was make a bit of extra money so that Simon could work on a less stressful job (that didn’t require him to travel) AND be a real dad to his 5 children..  Oh and it needed to be some thing I could do from home – with 5 kids, three under school age, my place was at home for them..

Sounds pretty easy, right?

Only needed to be an extra few hundred dollars a month to make it work!

I spent months getting excited about loads of seemingly ‘quick fixes’ – you know the ones?  They promise to help you make a million dollars before lunch AND you won’t need to work for more than 5 minutes!

I was getting very down hearted and desperate – I wanted my husband back…

Then in June 2004, a good friend of mine told me he was going to a conference all about starting an “Internet Marketing Business based on real hobbies”..  He emailed me the ‘sales letter’, it was really really long!  I poured over every word..

Finally it appeared I had found the answer – there was only one problem – it cost $1997 AND the conference was 3 states away (so I would have travel & accommodation expenses).

I actually read that conference sales letter 10 + times over 7 days trying to come up with a way to get there!

You see, although Simon was making good money, all it really did was keep us afloat, we certainly didn’t have a spare $3000+ to spend on some thing that may not give us a return..

Finally, I rang Simon (he was away, of course) and we discussed it, we tried to work out a way to make it possible..  He was all for working out how he could get home and be a dad!

To cut a long story short I managed to find the money – from our savings and using a small loan.  I just had a feeling that this time I was going to get life changing information that could really set my family up.

And boy am I glad I followed that gut feeling!

I went to that conference and unlike 90% of the other attendees I actually took action!  I did EXACTLY what I was told – maybe it was because I felt like I had my back to the wall!!

3 months after that conference I went to a second conference, this time I had a business online and was making money from that business..

My Quilting Profits book had been born!

After that I created and ran Creative Quilting and Quilting Weekly (with Chris Dahl) – I still operate those two websites.

Best of all – by 2006 Simon was able to come home (18 months later)..  Not only did he come home, he started working with me online, to grow our businesses.

And we haven’t looked back since.

Simon and I now work side by side and have done for over 4 years and best of all he gets to be a real dad. He even volunteers at the kids school all the time and plays in the same sporting teams as our teenagers – trying his best to embarrass them!

All the kids are at school now so we have moved our businesses into a “real office” instead of being at home. Plus the business has gone down many other paths we never envisaged it taking at the start.

For example during the last 2 years we have been helping local small businesses get online by creating websites for them and running seminars and workshops (my teaching degree is paying off)..

We have even won state and federal government grants to provide the community with much of this information.

Most surprisingly to me is that we have people coming to us all the time now asking if we can consult with them about their online marketing strategies & websites.  They want to (and do) pay us by the hour.

I can now make more money in a one hour consultation that I can teaching for one day!  Wow, things have turned around.

Wrestling with that decision to buy a ticket and go to that seminar, and finally taking that action (after struggling with the decision for 7 days) taught me one essential lesson:  You have to listen to your instinct and take action (some times this means taking a risk).
